Hiking is one of the easiest kinds of getaway you can arrange, and one you can do all year round. There are around 20 marked trails dotted about the county, taking in all of its different landscapes – forests, bogs, rivers and lakes. The trails in the Elva recreati onal area, for example, are perfect for adults and children alike. Those fascinated by the diversity of nature should check out the Alam-Pedja nature reserve and the protected landscape areas of Emajõe-Suursoo and Vooremaa. The visitor centres, nature schools and hiking trails here attract nature-lovers to the area all year round, whatever the season. Those who feel more at home on or close to the water can go boating on the Emajõgi River or sailing on lakes Saadjärv or Võrtsjärv, while a number of farms in the county also off er trout fishing. Stables throughout the county off er horse-riding in the warmer months and horse-drawn sleigh rides when there’s snow on the ground. Not only are both exciting activities in their own right, but they are ideal for the whole family. Larger groups visiting the county together may be interested in paintball or donning their swimming costumes and relaxing together in a traditional barrel sauna. There’s also plenty to do here in summer: cycling, ATV rides, archery and ballooning are just some of the activities you can try. Winter sports lovers can make the most of the county’s many ski tracks, pop on their skates or go hiking in snowshoes. In addition to outdoor recreation, you can also enjoy the facilities at the Aura water park, marvel at the wonders of science at the Ahhaa centre and ice-skate in the Lõunakeskus shopping centre.
