Itinerary: Tromso-Alta

Period: December 2019-March 2020

Length: 5 days / 4 nights

Tour languages: English Spanish

Arrival in Tromso, transfer with regular airport express bus to the city centre, short walk to Hotel Radisson Blu Tromso**** or similar, check-in. The evening offers an optional Tromso Cable car tour where we can enjoy the spectacular panoramic views of Tromso and the surrounding islands, mountains and fjords. If we are lucky the Northern Lights will show up and top off this already impressive experience.

Tromso is one of the world’s largest cities North of the Arctic Circle and a city, where modern urban life and breath-taking arctic nature go hand in hand. During morning city tour we get acquainted with the world’s most northern Botanical gardens and enjoy the views of the mountains to the east and south. We continue with a visit to Tromso University Museum, where we learn fascinating facts on nature and culture in northern Norway and the indigenous Sami people. Following that, we continue around the island passing Lake Prestvatn with the Meteorological Institute and cross the bridge to the Arctic Cathedral for a visit to this masterpiece with a monumental stained-glass window. In the evening we go to the Aurora Camp where we are equipped with thermal overalls and boots to keep us nice and warm all evening. 300 friendly Alaskan huskies are waiting to greet us and enjoy some cuddles. We enjoy a traditional Norwegian dinner and wait for the Northern Lights to appear in the sky.

Today we continue to Alta. The distance between Tromso and Alta is about 300 km. The trip takes around 8 hours Capitals of Northern Lights and includes two ferry rides and a lunch. The trip takes us through the most stunning mountain landscapes and is something to remember for a long time. We arrive late afternoon in Alta and check in at Hotel Thon Alta***. The evening offers an optional Northern Lights tour. We visit the family owned Sorrisniva Adventure Facility, which is perfectly located to maximize our chances of seeing the magnificent Northern Lights. We have an excellent opportunity to learn more about this intriguing phenomenon as well as the history of Alta.

Today we start with a visit to the award-winning Alta Museum, located at the site of early settlement of Finnmark dating around 11,000 years ago and featuring exhibitions on local culture and history. Afterwards we visit to the elegant and modern Northern Lights Cathedral located in the central part of the town. The balance of the day is reserved for exploring more of this arctic town on our own. The evening offers optional sleigh ride under the Northern Lights. We travel to a farm in the nearby countryside, where we climb aboard a sleigh and get bundled up in warm blankets. The sleigh is pulled by a Norwegian Fjord Horse through the forest and along the Alta River, while we sit back and enjoy the peace and beauty around us. At the end of the ride, we stop at a wilderness shelter where a traditional dinner is served around a warm fire and if we are lucky we are bedazzled by the Northern Lights.
